Still Golden

After a couple of years of making music and putting in the work behind the scene Still Golden introduced themselves with their first single: "Deciduous". The duo (Joel Koehler and Jake Bassen) set to release their second single "Antagonist"; the song will be heavier than the "somber groove" of their first single. Koehler wrote the upcoming single while he was at college in Boise. He and a friend were playing their guitars in a park when a stranger approached them and joined in; borrowing Koehler's guitar the three wrote the song in the moment. Since then, "Antagonist" has been adjusted, parts have been rewritten, but at its core, it is the song written in a park with a stranger.

A mutual friend was aware of their backgrounds and similar tastes in music and connected the two. They did not plan on taking their music seriously, but they have great chemistry in the creative process so it has naturally worked out.

Koehler began drumming in middle school, but when he moved to college, he quickly discovered drums were a bit too loud in dorm rooms so he began playing guitar. Since then, he has stuck to the genres he discovered through drumming. Koehler brings in influences from mid to later 2010's pop punk and mid-west emo.

Bassen's parents surrounded him with music his entire childhood. He quickly became interested in music through their tastes; his father frequently played guitar-driven rock. When opportunity to play guitar arose at a family reunion he took it. He has been recording music practically nonstop since that first time he picked up a guitar. Bassen brings influence from older pop punk and early emo.

Together they aim to mix those influences and rely on a nostalgia-based reaction to create a new, modernized version of what they grew up on.

Still Golden takes pride in their recording process being purely DIY. The pair has written, recorded and mixed everything themselves. These DIY ethics will continue as they release their first EP summer of 2023.
