Mother Sun

Three quarters of Mother Sun grew up with musical families. While they grew and began to have their own identities, they were mainly shaped by their parents playing in bands. They were both around and in jam sessions at many parties. With or without family involvement they all found their way to music. They got a start in their local music scene early on and have been playing in bands since. In Mother Sun, Alex Ward plays keys and bass, Jared Doherty plays guitar and is the main vocalist, Emilio Pagnotta plays guitar and vocals, and Jared Wilman plays drums and also helps with backing vocals.

Mother Sun believes music sounds 'like magic' when it is played with equally skilled musicians. The band explains how the telepathy brought upon by this magic creates an unmatched spontaneity. This 'magic' is obviously best experienced first-hand at live shows. Mother Sun is hoping to be able to share their "dreamy, jazzy, psych-pop" on stages in the near future. Until then they are working on writing more music to play with on stage.

Mother Sun has a new-ish record out that was recorded in summer of 2020. "It's a bit tense and anxious, kind of reflective of the way the last year has felt for us early in the pandemic," explains Mother Sun. The record is called Sips. The whole record has a woozy, indie-pop sound to it. Much like the rest of Mother Sun's music Sips is fun to listen to; you don't have to pretend to like it to sound 'cool'. The album is effortlessly good, with their hard work prevalently dripping from it. Mother Sun has put more of their hard work into some songs that will be released later this year. These new songs are not quite as tensely reflective as the songs on Sips.

In addition to making music, Mother Sun founded their own record label and recording studio, Divine Bovine Records. The label and studio is located in British Columbia, Canada and focuses on recording and releasing albums for bands in their local scene. After all, the best music comes from local scenes that are filled with supportive artists who encourage each other to keep making art.
