Bugsy

Emily Schoonover was introduced to punk rock at an early age. This introduction lead to an interest in making music. The want to make music was solidified when she saw Babes in Toyland; seeing other girls play loud, fast music made her feel like she could do the same. Her tastes and inspirations have changed as she has gotten older. Schoonover has brought her evolving inspirations to her band's sound through song writing, vocals and guitar. She has stuck with music through her evolving tastes because music provides a space for her to connect with herself and others. Schoonover believes music causes healing; "It's a way to see the world and it really encapsulates what it means to be human to me," explains Schoonover.

Griffen Desai became the coolest 11 year old when he began listening to a ton of Nirvana. Since discovering Nirvana he has found a love for music in general. Music provides a connection that can not be explained, Desai says music is, "emotionally mysterious". He has seemingly latched onto this musical mysteriousness and music has become an essential part of his life. Desai provides lead guitar for Bugsy; he brings inspiration from bands like The Pillows and No Buses.

Shannon Maroney was raised by parents who had such an interest in music that they enrolled their children in piano lessons. So Maroney took the lessons, but did not really take music seriously until joining the high school choir and playing bass and guitar in their high school band. The part of music that has taken hold of them is the broad range of creativity a person has within music. There are hundreds of different genres and ways you can express yourself; all of these methods of creativity allow for connection from musician to listener.

Alex Norman's parents both loved music. From a young age Norman has had an interest in music even if he did not know it. Later on Green Day sparked the idea for him that he too could be in a band. Since then he has chased the feeling of creating something that he really enjoys. The process of going from nothing to something that reflects how you're feeling in a neat little package that is nice to listen to is an extremely rewarding feat.

Schoonover knew each member of Bugsy even though they did not know each other. She met Desai in a science class where they discovered they both had an interest for music. Schoonover knew Norman from a different band they played in so he was asked to hop in on drums. In search of a bassist/vocalist Schoonover posted an ad on FaceBook. She got a response from Maroney, then they scheduled their first band practice where they found how well they work together. The members of Bugsy have become good friends and aim to continue making music together and growing as individual musicians and as a band.
