Scotty Malcom

Scotty Malcom is a solo artist who looks to his friends and fellow musicians to collaborate with. His most recent collaboration is with his friend Rick West; they have made an album together that Malcom describes as "Casper the Friendly Ghost rock". They had fun with creating a sound they liked that almost fits a cartoon, complete with goofy lyrics.

Malcom began writing music after he discovered how fun it was. The first song he wrote was a goof about vaping with a friend, the song had no meaning, but creating it was fun. Since then Malcom's lyrics have become more serious, but he still likes to have fun with it. His music is almost always personal- with the exception of the silly, goofy songs he makes with his friends. He hopes people will relate to his more personal lyrics.

Malcom's inspiration comes from a variety of sources depending on what he is feeling at any given time. He consistently finds inspiration in The Velvet Underground and Daniel Johnson. His music is an extension of what he is experiencing and feeling when he writes. He would still be making music if people did not listen, but the fact that people do listen helps validate the sense of productivity he feels when he is making music. Malcom makes music because he feels like he needs to document what he is doing and feeling, it provides the same outlet of documentation that Instagram provides for some people, only a little more creative.

Listening to music not only helps Malcom fulfill his need to be productive and make something, but it also gives him a buzz. Listening to music heightens emotions. Music can make anyone feel a range of emotions, but it always makes you feel something and that is why Malcom makes music.
