Bummer Girl

Describing their sound as “psychedelic garbage rock with a lil sugar on top”, Bummer girl knows how to have fun with their music. They have recently begun recording a 20 song record; their first full length album. The record will be entirely self produced, recorded and mixed. The band wants to put in the work to ensure the record is just what they want. The record, that is yet to be named, will jump from genre to genre giving Bummer Girl the freedom to simply make what they like. The band has been told if they want to make it big they need to stick to one genre. Bummer Girl disagrees with this logic, using the Beatles, as an example of a successful band that refused to stick to one genre. The group are firm believers in there being no rules in music stating, “people will tell you there are rules, but they’re wrong”. After all, how can there be rules on self expression?

On New Years Eve 2019 drummer, Devon Dorough, invited Walter Wilson to play at a house show. After playing a few songs the two formed Bummer girl with a guitarist. When it was time for the old guitarist to go off to college Cameron Demecs replaced him. A bit later Joey Stepp came home from college; the other boys knew he played music so they figured “why not bass?”, and threw Stepp into the band to replace the original bassist. The original guitarist and bassist are good musicians, they just were not the right fit for Bummer Girl. After Stepp and Demecs joined the band Bummer Girl began to click and Bummer Girl’s line up became the perfect fit for the group.

Each member has a different music background that lead them to where they are now: making music together. Dorough grew up wanting to learn guitar; his father, a drummer, insisted that he learn drums and his brother would learn guitar. It was not exactly what he wanted at the time, but it worked out for him. For Dorough music is something that is fun. No matter what you play, or who you play with you are bound to have a good time with music. Stepp took a few piano lessons as a child and was raised by a couple of music lovers. His parents helped form a solid foundation of classic rock for Stepp to build his own taste on. Wilson grew up with Stepp; Wilson was always impressed with Stepp's ability to just pick up an instrument and play. After hearing John Lennon's Plastic Ono Band something really clicked, that making music was going to be a good use of his life, so he picked up a guitar. Demecs father is a big music fan which coincidentally wore off on Demecs. It works out that he is good at making music since he enjoys it so much.

Bummer Girl really enjoys making music together. They hope to be able to make music their full time gig, joking that they would get bored and all end up in somewhat boring careers if they had the luxury of not having to work a day job.
