Runaway Octopus

Runaway Octopus is a surf rock band made up of Michael Starry and Isaac Murcar. Their genre of surf rock is closer The Ventures or the Surfarians than the sound of The Beach Boys. You can listen to them on Bandcamp and hear the influences of the surf sounds of the sixties, as well as many other inspirations. Starry plays bass while Murcar plays guitar and drums on their records. Their pal Gretchen plays back the drums for live shows and they all sing.
All the members of Runaway Octopus grew up in the 90's with parents who played in various bands. Growing up with music so closely it only made sense they got into music. Along with the music their parents made, they also find inspiration in bands such as La Luz, The Pixies, and Neutral Milk Hotel as well as many other bands.
They started out playing small bars lacking sound systems and in corners typically reserved for pool tables. Even though these non-ideal gigs were not fun at the time they gave Runaway Octopus a good opportunity to work out any issues and get some practice in before heading onto a real stage. Their first official show was a family friend's birthday party they had a very supportive group of friends and family there to see them play. However, the majority of the crowd was not super excited for them since they opened for two cover bands and it was a "cover band crowd". Since then they have played for crowds that were much more excited to hear them play. Their favorite show so far was when they opened for one of their biggest inspirations La Luz.
Runaway Octopus will be playing at the Bartlett in Spokane, WA on September 7th. You can follow them on Instagram @runawayoctopusband for more show dates in the fall.
